Obituary for Preston Mackey Williams Preston Mackey Williams
Lifelong Rockbridge Resident Was Mathematic Teacher, Gifted Writer, Sculptor

Preston Mackey Williams of Timber Ridge, Virginia died peacefully at his home on March 13, 2021 with his family by his side.

He was born in Lexington on March 22, 1952, the youngest child of William Twyman Williams III and Susan Macon Mackey Williams.

A lifelong resident of Rockbridge County, he graduated from Rockbridge High School and Radford University. Following a career in education teaching advanced mathematics, he spent several decades in the business and trade industry working with architects and home contractors. He was a gifted artisan who sculpted recycled copper, inspired by the beauty found in the woodlands and rivers of the Shenandoah Valley.

He was also a gifted writer of stories drawn from his childhood memories of hunting and camping with his father, who was a natural outdoorsman.

Those who knew Preston undoubtedly visited his home in Timber Ridge, or more likely, the Mill Hole, where he hosted numerous gatherings of family and friends – more often than not leaning on the bed of his pick-up truck.

He was an eclectic mix of intellectual, naturalist, artist, avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and Rockbridge County good ole boy. We are thankful for every moment we had with him, for the lessons of life he taught us, and for the great joy of living that was always in his soul.

Preston was a devoted husband, father, and papa. He is survived by his red-headed gal, Blair Martin Williams, whom he married on June 25, 1977. He is also survived by his children, Macon Blair Williams Worsley, and her husband, Mark C. Worsley of Richmond, and Maury Lyle Williams and partner, Georgina K. Doyle of Keswick; his grandchildren, Susannah Blair Worsley, Lennox Kay Doyle, Levi Mackey Williams, and forthcoming grandson; his five brothers and sisters, Twy Williams of Callao, Jack Williams of Moncks Corner, S.C., Suzanne Crawford of Lexington, Dan Williams of Raphine, and Annabel Johnson of Sterling; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

A celebration of his life will be held later this year with family and friends at the Mill Hole, where we will share stories that pay tribute to his intelligence, sense of humor, and love of good times and family. Those wishing to honor his memory may do so by contributing to your charity of choice, or by raising a bottle of Old Milwaukee (if you can find one).

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
