Rockbridge Baths Resident Was World War II Veteran, Longest-Serving Ruritan Club Member In The Nation

Wallace Hart Beckner, 94, of Rockbridge Baths, Virginia, died peacefully Thursday, March 24, 2021.

He was the son of the late William Walter Beckner and Mary Frances Hart.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Shaver Beckner; brother, William "Bill" Beckner; sister, Mary Frances "Pank" Gaynor; and daughter-in-law, Sue Dillard Beckner.

He is survived by his sister, Bernice Rexrode; two sons, Wally Beckner and James Beckner (Valerie); grandchildren, Jenny Newman (Bernard), Amy Leslie (Chris), and Linley Beckbridge (Leslie); and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear friend, Lorene Steele.

Wallace, nicknamed "Bunny," was born July 4, 1926 in Rockbridge County. He graduated from Brownsburg High School and went on to serve as a sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. After he was honorably discharged, he attended Hampden Sydney College, and then began a long-standing career at Burlington Industries. For many years after retirement, you could find him at the Fairfield Co-Op.

Wallace was a devoted friend to many and a beloved member of the community. He was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church where he held several leadership capacities and enjoyed mentoring and preaching. He was an active member of the Brownsburg Ruritan Club and was the longest-serving Ruritan member in the nation! He was also a lifelong farmer and could fix just about anything on the family farm.

Wallace considered his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his extended family, and friends to be the greatest blessing in his life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brownsburg Ruritan Club, P. O. Box 113, Brownsburg VA, 24415.

There will be a private graveside service. A celebration of life will be held later.
