Rockbridge Resident, Retired VMI Bookkeeper Dies At Age 99

Lydia Painter Blackburn, 99, went home to be with her Lord and Savior and our Dad on March 26, 2021.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Pearl Painter, her seven siblings and the love of her life our Dad, Howard Blackburn, and her son-in-law, Robert Dickens, along with nieces and nephews.

Mom is survived by her daughter, Patricia Dickens; her son, Timothy Blackburn (Debbi); six grandchildren, Angela, Tim, Dave, Andrew, Jonathan, Kerri, eight great grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, niece and husband, Ann and Walter Wilmore and other nieces and nephews.

Mom was a very devoted Christian and served her Lord for well over 90 years. She also was very dedicated to her church, A.R. Presbyterian most of her life. She taught Sunday school for over 40 years and had Bible studies in her home and Heritage Hall for many years.

Lydia also volunteered at Heritage Hall for years after her retirement.

Mom retired after 30 years as a bookkeeper for VMI.

She leaves behind lots of friends who will miss her dearly. Our family would like to thank all of her dear caregivers, Carol, Kathy, Carolyn, Doris Ann, Carol and all her dear friends that brought her meals and lots of visits and her pastor, the Rev. Ben Dowling.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 1 at Oak Grove Cemetery with a memorial service in the A. R. Presbyterian Church immediately following the graveside service with Rev. Ben Dowling officiating. Due to COVID-19, please wear a mask.

Memorial contributions may be made to A. R. Presbyterian Church or Rockbridge Christian Academy or Rockbridge Area Hospice or one of your choice.
