Self-Employed Timber Cutter Was Iron Gate Resident

James Esery (Red) Broughman, Jr., age 83, of 711 Commerce Avenue, Iron Gate, Virginia died Sunday, May 16, 2021 at his residence.

Red was born January 20, 1938 in Botetourt County, Virginia to the late James Esery Broughman, Sr. and Lola Ola O'Conner.

He was a self-employed timber cutter who enjoyed being outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack L. Broughman and a sister, Mary B. Lipes.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Sue Hayslett Broughman; four daughters, Bonnie Paxton (Bruce) of Covington, Shirley Kimberlin (Wayne) of Covington, Cynthia Dudley (Jimmy) of Eagle Rock, and Crystal Hoke (Bobby) of Covington; six sons, Roger Broughman (Ellen) of Clifton Forge, Carrol Broughman (Sharon) of Clifton Forge, Michael Broughman (Tana) of Fredericksburg, Edward Broughman of Clifton Forge, Charles Broughman of Clifton Forge, and Stuart Hayslett of Covington; a step daughter, Gail Gehringer; a sister, Phyllis Wilhelm (Ted) of Clifton Forge; a brother, Elmer Broughman (Judy) of Ashland; 17 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and his cat "Fred".

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Virgil Woodie officiating. There will be no formal visitation.

Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, is handling arrangements.
