Sarah Ellen (Sally) Shackleton Steele, age 89, of Evergreen Road, Covington, Virginia died Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center in Low Moor.

Mrs. Steele was born August 18, 1931 in Wilmington, Delaware, a daughter of the late Alfred and Helen Shackleton.

She was a homemaker throughout her life, but also worked as a toy room coordinator for the Alleghany County Christmas Mother program, and helped with the Red Cross. She was also a director for a special education school.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Leroy Steele.

She is survived by a son, Robert "Bobby" Swieder of Covington; a granddaughter, Melissa Newman and husband, Mike; three great grandchildren, Alex Newman, Hayle Newman, and Michael Newman; and her very special friends, Lisa and Guy Richards, John Rowe, and Jim and Marlene Faidley.

In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, handled the arrangements.
