Obituary for Jackie Ray McCormick Jackie Ray McCormick
Well-Known, Retired Lexington Brick Mason Dies At Age 87

Jackie Ray McCormick, 87, of Lexington, Virginia, died Thursday, May 27, 2021 at his home.

Born April 10, 1934 in Rockbridge County, he was a son of the late William D. McCormick and Susan Conner McCormick Paynter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Catherine Bane McCormick; one grandson, Andrew Helmick; two sons-in-law, W. Dana Helmick and Matthew Wilmer; and one daughter-inlaw, Tracy McCormick Vess.

Jackie loved riding horses, trail rides, and camping with his family and friends. He was a hard worker all his life, and was never one to seek praise or recognition for himself. His word was as good as any complicated binding contract and he expected the same from others. He was dependable, honest, honorable and reliable.

In his earlier years, he worked on a farm, which he loved, and then he learned the trade of brick and masonry work, which he continued for 60 years. He was respected as a quality brick mason contractor and was associated in major construction in Lexington, Buena Vista, Rockbridge County and the surrounding areas. Some of his masonry skilled work can be seen in our area in many major buildings such as Rockbridge Regional Jail, Stonewall Jackson Hospital Extended Care Facility, UVA Hospital, and Washington and Lee University, as well as numerous private homes. He also taught and trained many of his helpers to become brick masons throughout his career.

Surviving are his children, Catherine McCormick, Jeffrey McCormick, Molly Crowder (Steve), John McCormick and Candice Wilmer (Randall); one sister, Debbie Knick (Jimmy); one brother, Curtis McCormick; grandchildren, Jacob McCormick, Justin Crowder, Jessica Ferguson (Travis), Taylor Eppard (Brett), Dylan Wilmer, Jenna Golden, Trevor Golden, Jasmin Lynn McCormick and Audree McCormick; two great-grandchildren, Ella and Olivia Ferguson; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 4 at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens by Butch Irvine.

Visitation with family will be held at the VFW Post (beside Rockbridge Memorial Gardens) immediately following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, VA 24450.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
