Alleghany County Native, Westvaco Retiree, Dies At Age 81

Elijah Herbert Broady, Jr., son of the late Elijah and Rosetta Brown Broady, was born on November 17, 1939 in Alleghany County (Low Moor), Virginia. Elijah, of Low Moor, Virginia, passed away quietly on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Lewis-Gale Hospital-Alleghany.

"Bucky", as he was affectionately known by family and friends, attended Watson Schools in Covington, Virginia, and he served his country through the United States Army and Army Reserve from 1963 to 1969.

Bucky loved to hunt, fish, and watch sports on the television. Some of his most memorable moments involved taking his pontoon boat on Smith Mountain Lake to fish.

Bucky was employed by Westvaco Corporation in Covington, Virginia as a powerhouse operator, and after working thirty-eight years, he retired on December 1, 2001.

Bucky was a member of Main Street Baptist Church, Twin Oaks Hunt Club, a former member of the John W. Barnes Masonic Lodge #305, and the Local 675 Union.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Oteria Wallace Broady of Low Moor, Virginia; two sisters, Annie Broady Terry of Low Moor, Virginia and Florence Fletcher of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, Robert Broady of Detroit Michigan and Edward Broady of Fort Thomas, Kentucky; and one brother-in-law, Charles Waller of Cincinnati, Ohio.

To cherish his memory, he leaves his sister, Ella Mae Waller of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Wanda Broady-Qaiser-Hartman (Walter) of Salem, Virginia; two nephews, Mark Waller (Danita) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Joseph Terry, Jr of Neu Isenburg, Germany; three nieces, Terri Lynn Waller of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sharon Terry-Summerville (David) of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Brenda Nelson (Frank) of Grottoes, Virginia; a step-daughter, Ingrid Wallace Barber (Randy) of Clifton Forge, Virginia, a step-son, Lamont Hughes of Waynesboro, Virginia; special family members, Betty Liggins of Roanoke, Virginia and Diane Banks of Lynchburg, Virginia; six grandchildren, LaSandra Liggins of Roanoke, Virginia, Majid Qaiser (Elizabeth) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Courtney Ray Dudding (Kevin) of Covington, Virginia, Shante and Zoe Hughes of Waynesboro, Virginia and Ashland Barber of Richmond, Virginia; two great grandchildren, Jaiden Qaiser and Zoe Qaiser; three sisters-in-law, Genelda Wallace, Vanessa Wallace, and Romania Jordan (Oliver) of Clifton Forge, Virginia; four brothers-in-law, Leonard Wallace, Jr. (Joyce) of Easton, Pennsylvania, Richard (Gail) and Reginald (La Tasha) Wallace of Clifton Forge, VA, and Rodney Wallace of Salem, Virginia and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives, family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge. Interment will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. The family will receive friends on Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.
