Korean War Veteran Was Westvaco Retiree, Avid Square Dancer

Mr. Charles Allen (Chet) Fornwalt, age 90, of Covington, Virginia, died peacefully at home on June 22, 2021.

He was the husband of Saundra Hite Fornwalt.

Mr. Fornwalt was born on October 1, 1930 in Williamsburg Pennsylvania, the son of the late Charles F. Fornwalt and Bertha Sollenberger.

He was raised by his aunt, Ruth Hoover, after the death of his mother during childbirth.

During his working caree, he was employed at Westvaco, retiring after 38 years.

Mr. Fornwalt was a member of Falling Springs Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Fornwalt was an avid square dancer with local clubs and Clarks Ole Time Music Hall. Chet was a founding member of Men of Mission where he helped build more than three hundred handicap ramps in the Alleghany Highlands.

In addition to his wife, Saundra of sixty-six years, Mr. Fornwalt is survived by a son, Charles Allen Fornwalt, II (Robin); daughters; Laura Slayton Kyle (Lee), Amy Jo Blake (Tim), and Ruth Elizabeth Craft (Larry). Eight grandchildren, Sarah Oldendorf (Ken), Emily Gherman (Thomas), Jonathan Craft (Paige), Benjamin Craft, Cassie Bartocci (Greg), Catherine Seay (Tanner), Rebekah Burns (Austin), Isaac Blake; step grandson, Adam Kyle (Hannah). great grandchildren, Abraham and Wyatt Gherman, Kenny and Kyle Olendorf, Harper and Cora Bartocci, Lucas Craft, Charlee, Selah and Holden Burns. And a special niece, Linda Grove and husband, Mike.

Mr. Fornwalt was preceeded in death by his son-in-law, Michael "Spud" Slayton; his half sister, Thelma Sollenberger, and his step-brother, Ernest Hetrick.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2021 at Falling Springs Evangelical Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mike Matlack and Rev. Brent Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Falling Springs Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Craft, Benjamin Craft, Isaac Blake, Greg Bartocci, Thomas Gherman, Ken Oldendorf, Tanner Seay and Austin Burns.

The family will receive their friends Saturday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Men of Mission, c/o Thurmond Smith, 4002 Callaghan Circle, Covington VA 24426 and Falling Springs Evangelical Presbyterian Church, c/o Mike Matlack 105 Edgehill Dr., Hot Springs VA, 24445.
