Former Clifton Forge Mayor Was Vietnam Green Beret; Once Owned Alleghany Printing, Dairy Bar

Donald VanBuren Carter, passed away on Monday, June 28, 2021 at the age of 82.

Don is survived by his two children, son, Donnie Carter, and his daughter, Sonya Allen and her husband, Tim; his beloved granddaughter, Anna Gwinn; as well as many extended family and friends, especially Dickie Engleman and Tim Cathey.

Don was born on October 22, 1938 in Selma, Virginia, to Mabel VanBuren and Alonzo Carter.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his aunt, Mary Jones.

He joined the United States Army and was a Green Beret during Vietnam.

He owned many businesses throughout his life with the last being the Alleghany Printing Company and retiring from the Dairy Bar in Clifton Forge, Virginia.

He was a board member of the Clifton Forge Main Street serving as the Mayor of Clifton Forge for two terms. He was also a member of the Clifton Forge Coffee Club. He served as the Exalted Ruler of the Clifton Forge Elks Club, Board member of Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, a huge fan of UVA and was a season ticket holder for many years.

Per Don's wishes he will be cremated with his cremains spread where he hunted with his beloved son. There will be a memorial service held later in Clifton Forge.
