Former Monterey Resident Dies In Waynesboro At Age 52

Betty Denise Simmons, 52, of Waynesboro, Virginia, and formerly of Monterey, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2021 at her home.

She was born in Bath County on March 20, 1969 and raised in Mustoe, a daughter of the late Clement Marvin "Poss" and Dorothy Lee (Coffelt) Simmons.

A caring person, Betty was known to always place other's feelings and needs above her own. She enjoyed getting her nails done, decorating homes and taking care of her dogs. Above all, she will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her twin children, Steffanie Jean Mitchell and boyfriend, Sean Snyder of Staunton and Stephen Eugene Mitchell of Monterey; three granddaughters, Grace LeeAnn Mitchell, Rose Jane Mitchell and Sky Lee Mitchell; sister, Delana May Kelly and husband, Charles "Chuck" of Tappahannock; brother, Bobby G. Simmons of Roanoke; father of her children, Gary E. Mitchell of Monterey; two nieces, Jessica DeAscentis and Sarah Kelly; her companion, Shane Mason of Waynesboro; as well as her beloved dogs, Addie and Diesel.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, July 23, 2021 in Green Hill Cemetery located in Churchville with pastor Bobbie Jo Gardner officiating.

Family and close friends will serve as pallbearers.

The Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements.
