Former VDOT, Roanoke County PSA, City Of Lexington Employee Dies At Age 82

Beloved and cherished husband, father and grandfather Larry Andrew Rice, born August 10, 1938, passed away on July 26, 2021, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Rice's special dog, Peyton; parents, Dale and Luella Rice; brother, Dale Rice; sister, Nancy Wills and brother-in-law, Buddy Wills.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Nellie Rice; daughter, Karen Beard and son-in-law, Kenny; daughter, Julie Nicely and son-in-law, Chris; granddaughter, Alexx Beard; special dog, Cooper; and numerous extended family.

He loved football and played for Parry McCluer High School (class of 1956).

Larry spent 17 years working for VDOT which included working as a project inspector near the Pentagon. He then worked for the Roanoke County PSA and was the first director of public works for the city of Lexington.

Larry enjoyed spending many years selling novelties and antiques. He had a love of metal detecting and antiques and was an avid woodworker making furniture and specialty canes.

Larry made many wonderful friends over the years and never met a stranger. He loved his family deeply and shared how proud he was of them with anyone who would ask.

The family would like to thank Dr. Lyle McClung, Augusta Cancer Center and Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital for their care.

His larger-than-life presence, vast knowledge, strength of will, generosity, and beautiful and charming spirit and smile will be deeply and forever missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry's name to the Rockbridge SPCA, P. O. Box 528, Lexington VA, 24450.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory. Services will be private.
