Rockbridge County Native Was World War II Veteran, Longtime Clifton Forge Postmaster

Richard Waldo Miller, 97, of Glen Allen, Virginia, formerly of Clifton Forge, Va, went to be with the Lord August 9, 2021.

He was born August 13, 1923 in Kerrs Creek, Rockbridge County, Virginia, to Heiskell J. and Eliza Radie Miller.

Richard was an employee of Westvaco when he volunteered for the Army Signal Corps in World War II. He served in Biak, New Guinea in the Pacific, and was part of the occupational forces to enter Japan when the war ended. Once discharged, he travelled home to marry his faithful sweetheart, Kathleen Chaplin on February 16, 1946.

Richard is a former Postmaster of Clifton Forge, having retired in 1986 after 43 years of service.

He was a faithful member of Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church and held various positions such as deacon, elder, superintendent of Sunday School and youth advisor. He served on the Board of Zoning Appeals in Clifton Forge, as President of the Lions Club and was a member of the American Legion and VFW.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Kathleen; his parents, Heiskell and Radie; brother, Alfred Miller; sister, Patricia Hall.

He is survived by his sister, Pauline Tolley of Lexington; his sons, Rick Miller (Linda) of Richmond, Jerry Miller (Kim) of Dana Point, CA, and daughter, Becky Miller (Bob) of Richmond; five grandchildren, Amy Piehl, Scott Miller (Melissa), Christopher Miller, Bryan Miller (Michelle), Susan Scott (Charles); four great grandchildren, Emma and Jack Piehl, Max and Monroe Scott and a new little girl expected to arrive in October.

Richard loved to hunt, fish, raise roses, sunflowers and tried his hand at many activities, including carving over 100 canes from dogwood trees. Many have delighted from his gifts and talents.

He was a man of strong religious beliefs, a true Virginia gentleman, and was looking forward to the time he could be with his sweetheart, Kathleen once again.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Paul Brokaw officiating.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.

Interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge. Military honors will be presented at the graveside by members of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends attending the service.

Masks are not required but welcomed if you are more comfortable wearing one.
