Ronceverte Resident Was Once Named 'Foster Parent Of The Year'

Mary Louise Deem Sturgell went home to be with the lord on Sunday, August 22, 2021 after a short illness.

Louise was the daughter of the late Sam and Ethel Deem of Ronceverte, West Virginia. In her younger years, she attended Ketron United Methodist Church on Rockland Road. She worked many jobs throughout her life including Jim's Drive In, Fort Savannah Inn, but her most rewarding job was taking care of foster children of which she was awarded foster parent of the year in 1993. She was loving - known as Mawmaw to not only her grandchildren but to just about every child she met.

Louise was preceded in death by not only her parents but her baby brothers, Charles William Deem, Sammy Dale Deem, and Gary Hollie Deem and her oldest sister, Hazel Marie Russell and honorary granddaughter, Chasisty Hamm.

She is survived by her loving husband, Herman Sturgell. Her beloved children, Danny Deem (Allie), Kim Withrow (David), and Wolly Sturgell, all of Ronceverte; the loves of her life - her grand kids, Janet Kowalsky (Denny), Katelin Withrow (Zack), Mary Deem, Aaron Withrow, Gary Deem, Gabby Withrow, Haley Toney, and Clay Deem; great grandsons, Bradley Shirley, Darren Deem, and Emmett Kowalsky; honorary grand kids, Ashley Wilhoit, Destiny Hamm, and John Cloud; her sister-in-law, Betty Boyd, who had become her dear friend; her sister, Doris Lovelace; her brothers, Tommy (Barb) Roger, Johnny (Melanie) Deem. Many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews including her Sunday dinner crew, Don Kasie Bethany and Sammy Lovelace, Charles (Kelly) Alayna, Bentley &and Asher Deem, Debbie, Jeff, and Chelsea Blankenship (John).

A visitation for family and friends will be 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2021 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte, followed by a service at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Joey Morgan officiating.

A private interment will follow the service. Donations of sympathy may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
