Jackson Memorial COGIC Member Was Well-Known Clifton Forge Resident

Earsey Willard Godfrey, 72, of Clifton Forge, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 3, 2021.

Earsey was born on January 22, 1949, in Eagle Rock Virginia. Earsey was the 5th of 7 children of the late Charles Godfrey and Gaynell Alice Godfrey. He received his education in the Clifton Forge school system.

Earsey was a member of Jackson Memorial COGIC. He worked for several years in Clifton Forge, Virginia. He also worked at Shoney's Restaurant and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia until he became disabled.

Earsey was well-known in Clifton Forge. His sense of humor shined through, showing his fun-loving yet stern personality. Earsey joked about the famous boxer Muhammed Ali. He would quote his most famous phrase "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, the hands can't hit what the eyes can't see." Earsey said Muhammed Ali was one of the baddest men on the planet.

In addition to his parents, Charles and Gaynell Godfrey, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles, and Nelson Godfrey, and three sisters, Mary Young, Brenda Arnold, and Julia Johnson.

Left to cherish his memories is his brother, Edward Godfrey of Clifton Forge Virginia; a half-brother; Vincent Cooper of Clifton Forge Virginia. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday September 10, 2021 with the Reverend Arlene Cooper, eulogist. A viewing will be one hour before the graveside at Nicely Funeral Home, Alleghany St., Clifton Forge, VA.
