Obituary for Ricky Lee Hartman Ricky Lee Hartman
Lifelong Callaghan Area Resident Was Veteran, Head Custodian At Callaghan Elementary School

Ricky Lee Hartman, 63, of Callaghan, Virginia, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

Rick was born March 13, 1958 and was adopted as an infant by his parents, the late Bill and Daisy Hartman.

He grew up and spent his entire life in the Callaghan area where he attended Callaghan schools, taking part in mischief as much as possible.

After graduating from high school, Rick enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country as a Sergeant with Company B 23rd Battalion 503 Division Infantry of the 101st Airborne for a tour of duty stationed at Camp Casey, Korea.

After returning to the states following his military service, Rick found employment with Alleghany County Schools' maintenance department where he spent the last 40 years serving the students and faculty as the head custodian at Callaghan Elementary School, making many memories with no less than three generations of Callaghan kids. He retired after 41 years of service on October 1.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Hartman and a sister, Donna Lane.

He is survived by his loving wife, Melanie Hartman of Callaghan; three daughters, Amber Hartman Filip and husband, Jon of Leesburg, Ashley Hartman Waymack and husband, Tripp of Daleville, and Angela Trussell of West Virginia; a brother, William Armentrout and wife, Trish, a sister, Rita Dressler, all of Covington; a brother-in-law, Butch Lane; six grandchildren, Mia and Gavin Filip, Wyatt Waymack, and Logan, Alexis and Aleigha Trussell; and many, many friends at Callaghan Elementary School.

In keeping with Rick's wishes, his body will be cremated. There will be no formal visitation or memorial services. Military rites will be conducted privately at a later date.

The family suggests that memorial tributes in Rick’'s honor be made in the form of contributions to the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars at 710 E Dolly Ann Drive, Covington, Virginia 24426.

Arrangements are being handled by Arritt Funeral Home.
