Eagle Rock Resident Was Marine Corps Veteran, CSX Retiree

Donald Washington Simmons, age 86, of Eagle Rock, Virginia passed away early on Saturday, November 6, 2021 with his family by his side.

He was born February 22, 1935 in Iron Gate to Abraham Jonathan Simmons, Sr. and Stella Gertrude Clarkson Simmons.

Donald was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and enjoyed reminiscing about his time in the service.

He later was employed for 43 years at CSX Transportation, where he wore many hats throughout his career, most enjoyably that of union representative.

To further provide for his family, Donald was a hardworking farmer in addition to his formal career continuing for years after retirement.

He was a lifelong member of Iron Gate United Methodist Church and a member of Clifton Forge Elks Lodge #1065 B.P.O.E.

Donald enjoyed hunting and instilled his love of the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. When relaxing, he could be found in his rocker by the fire watching the Washington football team, CNN, or Gunsmoke.

Donald was fearless, passionate, and larger-than-life and his absence will be a heavy loss to all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Wimberley; a step-daughter, Jackie Lusk; three brothers, A.J. Simmons, C.L. Simmons and Homer Simmons; and seven sisters, Mary Cappalbi, Frances Bober, Hazel Piscunere, Bernice Deisher, Phyllis Huffman, Patsy Griner, and Dorothy Myers.

He is survived by his loving wife, Robin Bartley Simmons of Eagle Rock; two daughters, Deanna Stepp and husband, Jim of Salem, and Elizabeth Duncan and husband, Rick of Salt Rock, WV; a son, David Simmons and wife, Cari of Chesterfield; a son-in-law, James Wimberley of Weaverville, NC; a sister, Alice Wilkerson of Lynchburg; a brother, Robert Simmons and wife, Linda of Covington; two step-children, Joel Clark and wife, Heather of South Monroe, LA and Terrance Clark and wife, Amy of Columbia, PA; nine grandchildren, Michael Duncan, Samantha Stepp, Melynda Stoffa, Katelinn Mohn, Alex Stepp, Ashley Wimberley, Dallas Wimberley, Hunter Simmons, and Madelinn Simmons; three great-grandchildren, Kennedy Stoffa, Aiden Stepp, and Lily Ward; seven step-grandchildren; five great-step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend W. Pembroke Hall officiaiting. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Military Honors will be conducted at the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until time of service on Thursday.
