Obituary for Vernell Lee Braxton Vernell Lee Braxton
Clifton Forge Native Was Educator, Administrative Executor

Vernell Lee Braxton, age 74, of Columbus, Ohio died Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Orlando Health South Lake Hospital in Orlando, FL.

She was born April 24, 1947 in Clifton Forge, Virginia to the late Abraham and Betty L. Thompson of Clifton Forge, Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Abraham Thompson III and ex-husband, McCarthy Braxton.

Vernell grew up in Clifton Forge, Virginia, where she regularly attended Sunday School and participated in the youth department at First Baptist Church.

Upon graduation, she attended the former Hampton Institute in 1970 where she received a bachelor's degree in biology. Vernell was an educator and taught biology with the Newport News, Virginia School System. After earning a master's degree in reading from Xavier University, she became assistant principal and an administrative executor. She later became a consultant and was responsible for hiring new teachers.

Vernell loved to laugh and was fond of exercising and line dancing. As an adult, she earned a Black Belt in Karate and recently gave her approval while watching her nephew and great-nephew demonstrate their martial arts!

Vernell leaves behind a niece, Keniti Pinkett (Warren, Sr.); two nephews, Brady Thompson, Sr. (Jean) and Danowlin Stewart (Alysha); a sister-in-law, Rev. Rosetta Stewart, and long-time friends, Patricia Davis-Ross, Paula Maclin, Suzanne Dorsey, and Paul Briggs (Columbus, OH); several great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of relatives to cherish her memories.

The family wishes to thank you for your prayers and support.

A graveside service will NOT be held at Red Hill Cemetery for Vernell L. Braxton. A memorial service will be held at Nicely Funeral Home at 11 o'clock on Saturday, November 20, 2021. The family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m. The Reverend Rosetta Stewart, Pastor of the historic First Baptist Church of Covington, will be the officiant.
