Dr. William Albert McCown, 97, of Lexington, Virginia, passed away Sunday, November 28, 2021.

Born October 13, 1924 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Albert Orr McCown and Margaret Virginia Tardy McCown.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, Dr. James Samuel McCown (Lucille) and Albert Tardy McCown.

Dr. McCown was a graduate of Lexington High School, Washington and Lee University, and the Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II.

Dr. McCown had an optometry practice in Buena Vista for 53 years, showed horses for 25 years then spent many years showing dogs.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Dale Tucker McCown; two children, Craig Douglas McCown (Tracy) and Kelly Margaret McCown and friend, Mike Hemminger; three grandchildren, Catie McCown, Samuel McCown and Taylor Shirley-McCown and his girlfriend, Emily Engdahl; and sister-in-law, Josephine McCown.

A service will be announced at a later date.
