Rockbridge County Native Was World War II Veteran, Burlington Industries Retiree

Orville William Smith, 95, of Lexington, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2021 at his home.

Born July 20, 1926 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late John Baptist Smith and Annie Maude Wingate Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John B. Smith Jr. and O. Maurice Smith, and two sisters, Juanita S. Wade and Annie S. Holmes.

Orville served his country in the Army during World War II, where he was stationed primarily in Germany. While abroad he stood guard over POWs at the Nuremberg trials and was selected from his company to attend Gen. George S. Patton's funeral in Luxembourg.

He was a lifetime member of Lauderdale A. R. Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and later as an elder. He was a lifetime member of the Lexington Rescue Squad and retired from Burlington in 1990 after 38 years of service.

Orville enjoyed hunting, gardening, being outdoors and spoiling his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lillian Irvine Smith; two sons, John (Joanna) Smith of Lynchburg and Chester (Jane) Smith of Lexington; grandchildren, Katie Smith, Lesley (Andrew) Smith Maggard and Bryan Smith (Gabriella Jones); great-grandchildren, Claire and Tradd Maggard; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service at Oak Grove Cemetery will be conducted on Monday, December 20, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. by Pastor Ben Dowling followed by a memorial at Lauderdale ARP Church at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450 or to Lauderdale ARP Church, 300 S. Main Street, Lexington, VA 24450.
