Charles Edward Fitzgerald of Buena Vista, Virginia, died March 24, 2022.

Chuck started his life journey on June 7, 1946. He was one of six siblings born to Ida Arby Campbell Fitzgerald and Luther J. Fitzgerald.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Helen, Dennis, Gladys, and Ruth as well as his in-laws, Winters L. Painter and Bessie M. Painter.

Chuck served our country in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1969.

He worked for Branch Highways and retired in 2009 after 30 years of service.

Chuck dearly loved all his "four legged critters", his family, and a couple close friends.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Betty Jean Painter Fitzgerald; sister, Shirley Southers; and sister-in-law, Helen (Eddie) Wise; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to his nephew, Kevin Lilley; his niece, Carole Davis; his nephew, Steven Southers; and great-niece, Tiffany Braford, for all of their care and support over the years.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dean Staton.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Cats Unlimited in Chuck's memory.
