World War II Veteran Was Retired From Westvaco With Over 40 Years Of Service

Byron Ervin "Barney" Gutshall, 89, of Covington, died Saturday, March 25, 2006 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Gutshal was born February 19, 1917 at Trimble in Highland County, a son of the late Orvie and Vena Bussard Gutshall.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Noel Gutshall; two brothers: Winfree Gutshall and Connell "Pete" Gutshall; one sister, Beda Butshall; one brother-in-law, Arnold Hiner; and two nephews.

Mr. Gutshall was a veteran of World War II with the 69th Infantry Division and participated in the invasion of Berlin.

He had retired from Westvaco Corp. in Covington after over 40 years with the company.

He was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church in Covington and enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and photography all of his life.

Surviving are his special friend, Beulah Foster of Roanoke; one brother, Grant Gutshall of Staunton; one sister, Margie Hinter of Waynesboro; a sister-in-law, Louie Gutshall of Staunton; his devoted neighbors, Frankie and Alton Elmore of Covington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, March 28, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Arritt Funeral Home in Covington with the Rev. Michael Snider officiating. Interment will be made in Rosewood Cemetery at Lewisburg, WV; The family will receive friends one hour before the service on Tuesday at the Arritt Funeral Home in Covington. The family suggests donations be made in Mr. Gutshall's name to the Alzheimer's Association.
