Former Natural Bridge High School Librarian Dies At Age 77

Marjorie Ellen Jarvis Martin, 77, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington.

A native of Rockbridge County, she spent her childhood at Walkers Creek and her adult life at Wesley Chapel on the farm she loved and shared with her husband, Talmage Anderson Martin Jr., until his death in 2002.

During their 55 year marriage, they reared four children and celebrated the birth of nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Marjorie was the daughter of the late Levi Hubert and Edna Kirby Jarvis.

She was predeceased by her brother, Floyd Jarvis, as well as son-in-law, Don M. Gilkeson.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Jarvis McCray of Walkers Creek; a daughter, Carole Martin Gilkeson Baker of Houston and Charlottesville and husband, Burke; a daughter, Linda Hudson of Troutville and husband John; a son, T. A. (Pete) Martin III of Wesley Chapel and wife, Donna; a daughter, Rhonda Wailes of Amherst and husband, Paul; as well as grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Marjorie was a graduate of Madison College in Harrisonburg. She was among the first special education teachers in Rockbridge Conty, where she developed her own curriculum and taught life skills to her students.

She taught at Glasgow and Natural Bridge Elementary schools and retired as librarian at Natural Bridge High School.

Marjorie was a member of the Rockbridge Chapter 2568 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She grew up with Immanuel Presbyterian Church at Walkers Creek and later joined Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a member for more than 50 years.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles Carroll and the Rev. Barry Tucker officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends Friday, April 7, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.
