Obituary for Mildred Anderson Hanes Genet Mildred Anderson (Millie) Hanes Genet
Avid Gardener Was Longtime County Resident

Mildred Anderson (Millie) Hanes Genet, 93, of Lexington, Virginia, died April 18, 2006 in Roanoke, Virginia after a brief illness.

A graveside service honoring Millie Genet will be held at the family cemetery in Pine Hall, North Carolina on Monday, April 24, 2006 at 11 a.m.

Born on August 9, 1912 at "Pine Hall," her family's home in Pine Hall, North Carolina, Millie Genet was the daughter of Dr. John Lewis Hanes and Eliza Chisman Hanes.

Her adolescent years were spent in Pine Hall where she attended Madison High School.

In 1934, she graduated from Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, after which she taught elementary school in Pine Hall for several years.

On June 9, 1938 she married Max Genet of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She and her husband moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia in 1940 where they lived for forty-three years.

An avid gardener, she was a longtime member of the Garden Club of Virginia and was involved throughout her life in numerous charitable and community activities.

She was a devoted member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Glasgow, Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Chisman Hanes; and sisters, Pescud Rodenbough and Louise Byerly.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Eliza Genet of Chicago, IL; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Millie Genet of Atlanta, GA; her grandchildren: John Genet, Jr., and Edward Genet, also of Atlanta; and a stepson, Max Genet, Jr. of Palm Springs, California.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Salem College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Arrangements are being handled by the Ray Funeral Home In Madison, North Carolina.
