Equestrian Professional Loses Bout With Cancer

Amy Townend Ylvisaker Reistrup, 43, of Lexington, died on July 7, 2006, following a brief battle with cancer.

She was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mother and friend.

Amy's strength, love and courage will always be with those who had the honor of knowing and loving her.

She was a graduate of the Kent School (CT) and the University of Virginia, where she received a BA in psychology.

An accomplished professional equestrian, riding instructor, and intercollegiate coach, Amy's personal successes included countless national championships as a junior, amateur, intercollegiate and professional rider.

A Virginia Horse Shows member and VHSA Horeseperson of the year, Amy's Grand Prix show jumping career included multiple national and international placings and winning the 1999 Grand Prix de Penn National World Cup qualifier and an invitation to compete individually at the 2000 World Cup Finals in Las Vegas.

Most recently, Amy guided the Washington and Lee University's Mounted Generals to their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship and was named the 2006 ODAC Equestrian Coach of the Year.

Any was preceded in death by her brother, William W. Ylvisaker, and her mother's husband, George G. Raymond, Jr.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Gordon Reistrup; mother, Ellen (Robin) R. Raymond, Naples, FL; father, William T. Ylvisaker, Wellington, FL; sisters: Laurie Ylvisaker and Elizabeth Ylvisaker and her husband, Larry Keeley; brother, Jon Ylvisaker and his wife Eleanor; nieces, Maren, Brieze, and Marlia Keeley; daughter, Rebecca Mispel; her husband's parents, Paul and Tat Reistrup, McLean, VA; and their family; many cherished friends and students; and her beloved animals.

Amy will be remembered as a truly strong and beautiful person who will always be in our hearts. A celebration of Amy's life will be private and held at Amy and Gordon's farm.

In lieu of flowers, living plants, donations to your local SPCA or the Rockbridge Area Hospice are requested.

Arrangements are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.
