Charles Harold "Charley" Lauck, Jr., of Lexington, died Thursday, August 24, 2006 at his home following a long illness.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jacqueline Epes Lauck.
Born May 15, 1928 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Ida Saxton Baskerville Lauck and Charles Harold Lauck. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice Lauck Daniel.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Carol Lauck Entsminger and husband J. W. of Lexington; Susan Lauck LeMert and husband Paul of Malvern, PA; and Charles Edward Lauck and wife Elizabeth deJaham Lauck of Lexington; four granddaughters: Shelby Claire Ruley of Roanoke, VA; Katherine Segar Lauck and Caroline Marie-Louise Lauck of Lexington, and Meredith Elaine LeMert of Malvern, PA; and two grandsons: William Marshall LeMert of Malvern, PA and Peter Owen lauck of Lexington; and one sister, ida Lee Lauck Wysor of Chapel Hill, NC.
Mr. Lauck was a founding member and served on the board of advisors at Faith Assembly of God Church in Lexington. he was designated by the session as a lifetime elder and served on the board of deacons at the Lexington Presbyterian Church.
An alumnus of Washington and Lee University, he recevied an A.B. in Math in 1948 and a B.S. in Physics in 1949. Upon graduation, he taught at the Natural Bridge High School for the 1949-1951 academic years. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served until 1954, being discharged at the rank of Lieutenant JG. He then returned to Virginia to teach at Albemarle County High School from 1954-1958, during which time he also attended the University of Virginia. He received his M.Ed. in 1958 from UVA. Mr. Lauck then took a position at James Blair High School in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1956. He remained in Williamsburg until 1967 and served as a teacher and in different capacities coaching football, basketball, golf and tennis during his tenure there.
Lauck returned to his childhook hometown in 1967 to teach at Lexington High School (LDS). He taught Math at LHS until 1987. While at LHS, he started and coached the boys' and girls' cross country programs. He also founded the Interact Club and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at LHS.
Upon retirement, Mr. Lauck served as an assistant coach in track and cross country at the Virginia Militray Institute for 11 years. While at VMI, he received the Walt Cormack Track and Field in Virginia Award and was voted Southern Conference Coach of the Year in Outdoor Track and Field.
An avid runner, Mr. Lauck competed at the Masters level in numerous local and regional events from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. He was a familiar figure to many local residents, jogging on rural roads of Rockbridge County.
Funeral services are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA. Family night will be at Harrison's from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2006 and a memorial services will be held at the Faith Assembly of God Church in Lexington at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2006 with Pastor Terry King presiding. Private interment will be made at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Assembly of God Church, Lexington, the Rockbridge Area Hospice, the VMI Track Program, or the Lauck Scholarship Fund at the Rockbridge County High School.
