Covington Resident, Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Member, Dies At Age 79

Charlotte Ann Gauiter Martin, 79, of Covington, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the Springs Nursing Center, Hot Springs, Virginia.

She was born October 15, 1946, in Covington, Virginia, the daughter of the late Rufus Gauiter and Blanche Harry Gauiter.

Mrs. Martin was a preschool teacher at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with 20 years of service.

Family was her focus. She enjoyed being with her family and taking care of them. She enjoyed reading books.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald Elwood Martin, whom she married on December 21, 1964; a son, Gerald Scott Martin of Covington; grandchildren, Carrie Marie Martin of Covington, and Summer Vail and husband, Peyton of Hematite, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Triston, Elaina, Little Charlotte, and sisters, Sabrina Demarius and husband, Desi of Phoenix, Arizona, Nancy Clark of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Kim Martin of Covington; sisters-in-law, Peggy Gauiter of St. Louis, Missouri and Ruby Martin of Burnsville, Virginia; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dale and Betty Martin of Millboro, Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Todd Martin; brother, Rufus Gauiter; and sister, Michele Simmons.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Covington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, 1200 N. Alleghany Ave., Covington, Virginia 24426.

The McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home, Hot Springs, handled the arrangements.
