Obituary for Harold Nixon Wellman Harold Nixon Wellman
Served In U.S. Navy For Over 30 Years

The Lord Jesus Christ called his faithful servant, RADM (Ret.) Harold (Hal) Nixon Wellman, 77, home on Tuesday night, February 13, 2007.

He was born in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado on July 28, 1929 to Alice and Harold Wellman (now deceased).

After graduating from Wheatridge High School, he graduated from the University of Denver in 1951.

That same year he married his beautiful wife, Joan Ashcraft.

Hal enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country for over 30 years.

Ha's distinguished career included serving in the Vietnam War; was a test pilot at China Lake, California; Commanding Officer of NAS Cecil Field; serving CINCLANTFLT Inspector General; and Deputy Auditor General.

Hal and Joan retired in Natural Bridge, Virginia in 1985.

It was Hal's tireless and selfless efforts in the local community that touched so many people's lives. Hal was one of the driving forces in forming the Natural Bridge Volunteer Fire Department.

His commitment to spreading the truth concerning drug abstinence led him to speak to many local students.

He was an extremely active member of the Natural Bridge Ruritan Association.

Hal's indomitable spirit cascaded the community as he gave his life to help organize and lead a variety of initiatives to better other's lives.

Hal is survived by Joan, his wife of 55 years; brothers: George Wellman and Walt Wellman, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; his son, Capt. (Ret.) Michael Wellman and his wife, Kim of Salt Lake City, Utah; his daughter, Michelle Culver and her husband, Jon Culver of Plymouth, California; and three adoring granddaughters: Brittany Wellman Cory and Alexis Culver.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the High Bridge Presbyterian Church, Natural Bridge. A potluck will immediately follow in the fellowship hall.
