Obituary for James Luce Piersol James Luce Piersol
Forestry Graduate Was Avid News, Sports Fan

James Luce Piersol, 97, of Lexington, died Thursday, March 15, 2007 at his home.

He was born April 28, 1909 and was the last remaining child of the late Jacob Wolfe and Emma Luce Piersol of Bentleyville, Pennsylvania.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Johnston Piersol; and his four children: Lucinda Feldman of New York, New York; Virginia Piersol of Lexington; Jacob Wolfe (Jake) Piersol of Lexington; and Brian Conant Piersol of Brookly, New York; his four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mr. Piersol was a 1931 graduate of the School of Forestry at Syracuse University.

His first job was as a crew foreman in the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) in North Carolina. Following that, he was a forester with the Tennessee Valley Authority where he met his wife of 69 years.

After a year at the Oak Ridge nuclear processing facility in Tennessee, he was employed by Amos Thompson Corporation in Edinburg, Indiana, a producer of fine hardwood veneer.

As a buyer for that company, Mr. Piersol traveled throughout the upper midwestern states.

He and his wife raised their family in Culver, Indiana, where they were active members of the Culver Methodist Church.

Mr. Piersol was on the tennis team at Syracuse University and he continued to play recreational tennis through his eighty-fifth year. He also enjoyed playing golf and was a fan of baseball and football. He was an avid follower of current affairs and never missed reading the news of the day in his favorite newspaper.

Mr. and Mrs. Piersol retired in Titusville, Florida and relocated to Lexington, Virginia in 1995.

Visitation will occur Monday, March 19, 2007 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.

The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Skip Hastings at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 2 p.m., followed by refreshments in the fellowship hall. Memorial donations may be made to the Rockbridge County Hospice. Arrangements are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
