Obituary for Ray Malcom Carter Ray Malcom Carter
Worked With Railroad For 45 Years; Was Volunteer Chaplain

Ray Malcom Carter, born in Palatka, Florida on January 22, 1919 to William Ernest and Evelyn Mitchell Carter, died on April 13, 2007 at Penick Village in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

Mr. Carter lived most of his life in Richmond, Virginia, where he was married on June 1, 1946 to Hellen Spier.

He worked for the RF&P Railroad for 45 years, with his work having been interrupted for four years while he served in World War II with the 81st Infantry Division as the youngest master sergeant in the U.S. Army.

For more than 45 years, Mr. Carter did volunteer chaplaincy work in Virginia prisons. He was a long-time member, Bible teacher and elder at Overbrook Presbyterian Church until his family's move to Lexington, Virginia in 2003.

Mr. Carter is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Hellen S. Carter.

He left a wonderful example of providing for and prayng for his children, daughter Janice C. Reagan and her husband, John of Southern Pines, North Carolina; and a son, Paul Carter and his wife, Julie of Lexington;

He was the proud grandfather of give grandsons and one grandddaughter; one great grandson; he is also survived by his brother, William Ernest Carter, Jr. and his wife, Catherine, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, John M. Carter.

A service to celebrate Mr. Carter's life will be held in Lexington, Virginia, where he and his wife lived with his son's fafmily from July, 2003 until February, 2007. The family will receive visitors at the Harrison Funeral Home between 4 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, 2007. The funeral wll be held at the Grace Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. on Monday.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be given to FirstHealth Hospice and Paliative Care, 5 Aviemore Drive, Pinehurst, North Carolina, 28374 or the Grace Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 849, Lexington, Virginia 24450.
