Obituary for Jack F. Smith Jack F. Smith
Dairy, Beef Farmer Was Active In Church And Community Affairs

Jack F. Smith, 77, husband of Dorothy Vaughan Smith of Fairfield, died Saturday, June 2, 2007 at his residence.

Mr. Smith was born July 15, 1929 in Elizabethton, Tennessee, a son of the alte C. G. and Mima Barker Smith.

Jack was a dairy and beef farmer and was owner of Smith's Garage.

He was the former chairman of the Reassessment Board, Commissioner of the Revenue and Chairman of the District Commissioner's Association.

Mr. Smith co-authored the tax relief for the elderly and the land use plan for Rockbridge County in 1974-1975. He was a former member of the Rockbridge County School Board, former chairman and vice-chairman of the Joint School Board Committee with Rockbridge County and city of Lexington Schools.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church since 1953, serving on the Board of Trustees, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and numerous other committees, including the church choir for 50 years.

In addition to his wife of over 60 years, Mr. Smith is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard L. and Cindy Kubacak Smith of Butler, Tennessee; and Robert N. (Bobby) Smith of Fairfield; two grandsons: Jason R. Smith of Buena Vista and Travis Smith of Butler, Tennessee; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Richard and Phyllis Smith of Kingsport, Tennessee and C. G. and Billie Smith of Clifton; a sister, Winnie Ruth Johnson of Bristol, VA; three sisters-in-law: Jean Smith of Midlothian, Peg Smith of Suffolk and Doris Jones of Hampton.

Jack is also survived by many special friends including Wandal Campbell, Hamilton McClung, Dot Eakin, Ruth Cox, Dr. Peck, Dr. Sedovy, Jimmy and Nina Fortune, Wayne and Phyllis Fortune, Rev. Jim and Margie Hartless, and the "Right on Band".

He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2007 in the Fairfield United Methodist Church by the Rev. James Simmons. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 3-5 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home. It is suggested those desiring to make memorial donations do so to the Fairfield United Methodist Church Choir, P. O. Box 69, Fairfield, VA 24435.

The Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
