Registered Nurse Was BV Baptist Church Member

Phyllis Ferguson Byers, 76, of Buena Vista, passed from this life into her Eternal Home on Monday, August 6, 2007.

Born the youngest child of Charles Christopher Ferguson, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth McCullough Ferguson on February 18, 1931, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Charles C. "Buddy" Ferguson, Jr., and a sister, Virginia F. Shafer.

She was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church and the Golden Circle Sunday School Class.

A graduate of Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing, Phyllis was a registered nurse who began her career as the Operating Room Supervisor at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Virginia.

She is remembered fondly in her community for the 28 years she spent assisting Thomas B. Hedrick, M.D. in his local practice. In retirement, she continued to volunteer her gift of knowledge and calming touch to friends and family recovering from illnesses and surgeries.

Phyllis is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 48 years, Lemuel S. Byers, Sr.; one daughter, Susan L. Byers; two sons: Lemuel S. Byers, Jr. of New York; and Stephen L. Byers and wife, Amy of Asheboro, NC: four grandchildren; one great granddaughter; a sister, Clara F. Rice; and a brother, Carl Ray Ferguson.

A celebration of Phyllis' life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2007 at the Buena Vista Baptist Church with the Reverends Roy Thomas and David Bain officating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Home in Buena Vista. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Buena Vista.
