Employed By Lee's Carpets During World War II

Mildred Mae Goodwin Stoner, 83, of Natural Bridge Station, died Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Rockbridge County on July 12, 1924, to the late William Dolphus and Mamie Alice Goodwin.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Martin Burks (Buck) Goolsby and William Lewis Goodwin; and a sister, Annie Lillian Goodwin.

In her youth, she was active in the Women's Softball League and an avid supporter of the Natural Bridge High School Booster Club. Mrs. Stoner was employed by Lee's Carpets during World War II, where at that time, they manufactured canvas for tents used by the Armed Forces.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Calvin R. (Booster) Stoner; three children, Martin R. (Randy) Stoner and wife, Brenda of Natural Bridge, Judy Ann Shafer and husband, Doug of Buena Vista and James C. Stoner and wife, Deborah of Lexington; a brother, Jesse C. (Tippy) Goodwin and wife, Patsy and daughters, Cindy and Karen of Buchanan; grandchildren, Tammy Sue Knick and husband, Tim of Glasgow, Wesley Ray Shafer and wife, Erica of Buena Vista and Alice Mae Stoner of Lexington; stepgrandchidren, Kevin Tyler Akers and Brian Lawson Akers, both of Roanoke, Michael Meredith Rhodenizer of Bridgewater and Courtney Diane Rhodenizer of Lexington; two great-grandchildren Jeremy Trevor Hartless of Glasgow and Sebastian Lucas Ray Shafer of Buena Vista; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Morgan Brittany Knick and Timothy Ryan Knick of Buena Vista and one great-great-grandchild, Haedyn Glenn Hartless of Glasgow.

A special thanks to John Lee and Ruth Stoner, Bonnie Proffitt, and Tim Michels for all they did to help in our many hours of need.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Conrad Fogus officiating. Burial will follow in Glasgow Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2007 at Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
