Obituary for Herbert Dean Hutchings Herbert Dean Hutchings
Was Bass Soloist In Musical Productions Across The Nation

Herbert Dean "Hutch" Hutchings, 77, formerly of Columbus, Ohio and Denver, Colorado, died at his home in Lexington, Virginia, on Sunday, October 14, 2007.

A graduate of the University of Colorado (1951), Mr. Hutchings spent much of his life as a bass soloist in opera, chorale, quartet and musical productions. He performed solo work in Philadelphia, Central City, Colorado, Columbus, Ohio and throughout the nation.

Mr. Hutchings, a naval officer during the Korean War, pursued a career in Safety Management and was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers. His groundbreaking work in construction safety earned him praise locally and nationally.

In retirement, he was a proficient knife maker and collector, a fishing enthusiast and an avid reader.

Born in Elmo, Missouri to Pansy (Wood) Hutchings and Herbert Dennis Hutchings, both deceased, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jaclyn Ungemach Hutchings of Lexington; a sister, Patricia Wood of Millikin, Colorado; children: Colonel Eric Hutchings and wife, Janine, of Lexington; Leslie Hutchings Miller and husband Stephen, of Columbus, Ohio; Lisa Belser-Hutchings and husband, Charles Belser, of Berikon, Switzerland; and Patricia Lyn Hutchings Tweten and husband, Scott (MD) of Penngrove, CA. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren: Capt. Jennifer Hutchings Tackett and husband, Capt. Brandon Tackett, US Army, Iraq; Amanda Hutchings of Denver, CO; Michael Hutchings of Lexington; Joseph Craig of Boulder, CO; Lucia Craig of Athens, OH; Manuela Belser of Staunton, Va; Collin Belser of Berikon, Switzerland Amelia Lyn Tweten of Penngrove, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held Monday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m. at the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, Lexington, VA. Burial will follow at the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery.
