Obituary for Herbert Calvin Watts Herbert Calvin Watts
Railroad Retiree; Veteran Served With The Army During The Occupation Of Japan

Herbert Calvin Watts, 84, of Buena Vista, died Monday, October 29, 2007 at the Golden Living Center, Buena Vista.

He was born May 4, 1923 in Clifton Forge, a son of the late Herbert B. and Eleanor Louise Barlow Watts.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Naydine Brown Watts.

He was a 1941 graduate of Clifton Forge High School and retired from Pennsylvania Railroad Company with 38 years of service with the Freight Transportation Department.

After retirement, he worked for the Arlington Baptist Nursing Center, Baltimore, Maryland, for three years.

Mr. Watts served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific on New Caledonia with first port of embarkation supervising 25 native workers; with the 27th Infantry Division, 165th Infantry Regiment on the Island of Okinawa, and with the occupation forces in Japan.

He also served with the civil information and education detachment in the headquarters of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan.

He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, AMVETS, the Literacy Association of Rockbridge County, and St. John's United Methodist Church, Buena Vista, Virginia.

Mr. Watts is survived by a son, Rev. David Bennett Watts and wife, Beverly; three granddaughters: Victoria Elizabeth Abury, Rebecca Danielle and Melissa Annette Watts; one grandson, David Solomon Watts; a brother, Donald B. Watts, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2007 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dean Staton officiating. Burial will follow in the High Bridge Presbyterian Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
