World War II Veteran Was Retired From U.S. Army & Civil Service

Lt. Col. Thomas William Engley (Ret.), 87, of Lexington, died Thursday, November 8, 2007.

He was born October 4, 1920 in Providence, Rhode Island, a son of the late William Davis Engley and Agnes Blanchard Engley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

He was retired from the U.S. Army and Civil Service.

Mr. Engley was a World War II and Korean conflict veteran, having served in Europe and Korea. He was a member of the VFW Post 1499, M.O.A.A., 43rd Signal Company of Vterans Association, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Had Engley, whom he married June 23, 1943; three sons: Thomas M. Engley and wife, Cheryl, Potomac Falls; Kevin M. Engley, Woodbridge; and Brian F. Engley, Lexington; two daughters: Karen A. O'Neill and husband, Michael, Lexington; and Kathleen A. Gregg and husband, Eugene, Woodbridge; two sisters: Janet Ruggeri, Providence, RI; and Dorothy Catanese, Costa Mesa, CA; seven grandchildren: four great grandchildren.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Lexington, with Father Joseph D'Aurora officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens with full military honors. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m., with a Rosary service at 6 p.m. in the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
