Obituary for F. Edwin Burke F. Edwin Burke
Decorated World War II Veteran Was Active In His Community

F. Edwin Burke, 83, of Rockbridge Baths, died Friday, December 28, 2007 at Kendal.

Born February 8, 1924 in Fairfield, Virginia, he was a son of the late Frank Michael Burke and Bessie Dudley Burke.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ellen Cummins Burke; two sisters: Mildred Fauber and Mary Dixon; and one brother, Melvin Burke.

Surviving are one daughter, Lisa Burke Turpin of Lexington; one son, Barry E. Burke of Rockbridge Baths; one brother, Francis Burke of Fairfield; four grandchildren: Brett Ellen Turpin, Ryan Turpin, Cody Burke and Justin Burke.

Mr. Burke was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Central Fire Control Gunner on B-29 aircraft.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 3 oak clusters, the A/P Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. During his fifteen months of service, he was stationed in Guam and flew 33 missions over Japan.

Edwin was also a member of the Sam Houston Ruritan Club, on the Board of Directors for the Farm Bureau, member of the Rockbridge County Farm Service Agency, and was a member, Elder and Trustee of the Timber Ridge Old Stone Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2007 at the Timber Ridge Old Stone Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carl Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Timber Ridge ARP Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday, December 30, 2007 from 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
