Korean Conflict Veteran Worked At White's Truck Stop

Hiram Clifford Phillips, Jr., 78, of 4137 Cold Springs Road, Raphine, died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville.

He was born October 21, 1929 in Roanoke, a son of the late Hiram Clifford and Estella (Crawford) Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean Conflict, where he received the Purple Heart.

He was a member of Midland Baptist Church in Vinton and the Steeles Travern VFW Post #8279.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Phillips was employed as a supervisor at White's Truck Stop.

He previously owned and operated the Englewood Motel and Restaurant above Greenville.

Family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Hiram C. III and Myra Phillips, of Eden, NC; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Carr-Lou Davis, of Middlebrook; Dottie and Curtis VanFossen and Cyndy and Mike Hays, all of Greenville; a brother, Algie Phillips; a sister, Mable Berry, both of Raphine; six grandchildren: Carrsha Krzastek, Tessa Davis, Dylan Hays, Lily Hays, Jeremy Phillips, and Andrea Walker; three great grandchildren: twins, Hannah and Isabella Krzastek and Savannah Walker; a niece and nephew, Sheila Cash and Gwin Berry; and a special friend, Pat Hays.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Mae Phillips; two grandsons: Charles Hiram VanFossen and Jared Kyle VanFossen; a brother-in-law, Larry Berry; a nephew, Tony Chattin; a special cousin, Billy Stepp; and close friends, Frank Hays and Turtle Mynes.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Revs. Don Cash and Ray Fitzgerald with military honors by the Steeles Tavern VFW Post #8279.

Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Smith, Jimmy Humphries, Finley Campbell, Homer Harris, Gwin Berry, Irv McMahon, Dylan Hays, and Jeremy Phillips. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Grant, Wayman Bradley, Roger Stepp, Shelia Cash, Crystal McMahon and Val Hays.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2008 at the Henry Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Cyndy and Mike Hays, 5713 Lee Jackson Highway, Greenvlle, or his sister, Mable Berry, 711 Lofton Road, Raphine.
