Obituary for Alice Brown Weddle Alice Brown Weddle
Former Defense Analyst Was Avid Music Collector

Alice Brown Weddle, 91, of Lexington, Virginia, died peacefully in her sleep on February 4, 2008 at the Borden Health Center in Lexington.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, John O. Weddle, Sr.; her mother, Daisy Hallman Brown and John Gaines Brown.

Alice was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina and was a true Southern gentle lady.

She always remained a faithful member of the Manley Memorial Baptist Church and strongly believed in the positive power of prayer and regular worship. She was a wonderful, caring mother and a devoted wife.

Alice also had a twenty-year career working as librarian and analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense at the Pentagon in Washington, CD and at Arlington Hall in Arlington, Virignia.

Until her last few years, she was an avid collector of music. She loved the piano and had a beautiful singing voice.

She is survived by two sons: Dr. John Owen Weddle, Jr., Sunset Beach, NC; and Dr. William Elliot Weddle, Lexington, Virginia, who will remember their mother's most wonderful quality, which was the unconditional love she always gave them and the encouragement to set high standards and goals for themselves.

She is also survived by two grandchildren who will remember her as "Grandma Alice", who loved them both very, very much.

As the surviving members of her family, we have a list of people and organizations that we want to recognize for their dedication and support of our mother during the ten years she was a resident of Lexington. The list is by no means complete - because there were too many wonderful Rockbridge County residents who loved Alice and whom Alice loved. A special thank you goes out to Laura Kornegay, MD and Kaitlyn; Manly Memorial Baptist Church; Shirley Wingfield; Bobby Canfield; Bill Lomax (deceased); all the warm and supportive aides, nurses, occupational therapists, music leaders, activities planner and administrative people at Kendal; the nursing staff at Stonewall Jackson Hospital; the drivers of the Rockbridge Area Transportation Services; and last, but not least, all compassionate people who work for the Rockbridge Area Hospice.

There will be a private service held on a mountain overlooking the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. If friends of Alice would like to donate a remembrance, please contribute to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, P. O. Box 948, Lexington, Va. 24450.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Buena Vista, Virginia.
