Lifetime Farmer Was Decorated World War II Veteran

Lewis Smith Armentrout, 93, of Natural Bridge, died Friday, February 8, 2008 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

He was born August 24, 1914 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Howe Edward and Irene Beckner Armentrout.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Armentrout.

He farmed all of his life and was a school bus operator for Rockbridge County for over 30 years.

He was a life member of the High Bridge Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon and Elder and was a current church Trustee.

Mr. Armentrout was an Army veteran of World War II and earned two Bronze Battle Stars, a Purple Heart with one oak leaf cluster, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

He is survived by a brother, Lee H. Armentrout, Natural Bridge; a sister, Ernestine Davis, Michigan; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2008 at the High Bridge Presbyterian Church with Dr. Louis Skidmore and Rev. Glenn Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the High Bridge Presbyterian Cemetery. Contributions may be to High Bridge Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, February 10, 2008 at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
