Obituary for Norman Willis Irvine Norman Willis Irvine
World War II Veteran Was Founding Member Of The Lexington Baptist Church

Norman Willis Irvine, 84, of Lexington, died Sunday, February 17, 2008 in the VA Medical Center in Salem.

He was born April 6, 1923 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late James Boyd Irvine and Zelia Hall Irvine.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Louise van Ness.

He was a founding member of the Lexington Baptist Church, and was a veteran of World War II from February, 1943 to November, 1945, serving in the 29th Infantry Regiment in Iceland, England, France, Belgium and Germany.

Mr. Irvine is survived by his wife, Iva A. "Sally" Irvine; a daughter, Phyllis I. Edwards and husband, Bob, of Roanoke; three brothers: Garland Irvine, Curtis Irvine, both of Lexington; and Leslie Irvine, Omaha, NE; seven grandchildren: Stephanie Nimmo, Melissa Barr, Jonathan Edwards, Kendall Edwards, Courtney Van Ness, Gordon Van Ness IV, and Ian Van Ness; four great grandchildren: Joshua Barr, Hannah Nimmo, Faith Nimmo, and Trey Brookman.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery with Rev. Michael Wilburn officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lexington Baptist Church, 785 Old Farm Road, Lexington, VA 24450. Thanks to the Virginia Veterans Care Center for all their acts of kindness and care during Mr. Irvine's stay. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
