Obituary for Charles A. Potter, Sr. Charles A. Potter, Sr.
Served As County Treasurer For 28 Years

Charles A. Potter, Sr., 88, of Lexington, died Monday, March 10, 2008 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He was born December 10, 1925 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Ray L. Potter, Sr. and Nadine Montgomery Potter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Potter, Jr.

Mr. Potter was a charter member of the Effinger Fire Department and the Effinger Ruritan Club.

He was treasurer of Rockbridge County for twenty-eight years, past president of the Virginia Treasurers Association and past treasurer and member of the Virginia Beef Cattle Association.

He was a lifetime member of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, deacon, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, was a leader of Junior Workers for Christ and the choir.

He served as an American Red Cross volunteer for eleven years.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Gay McCurdy Potter; two sons: Charles A. Potter, Jr. and wife, Joan, and Steve Potter and wife, Martha; two daughters: Gaylea Goodbar and husband, Geoff and Lisa Ann Hartless and husband, Greg; a brother, Emory M. Potter and wife, Bessie; nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2008 at the Collierstown Presbyterian Chrch with Rev. Skipe Hastings and Rev. Horace Douty officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Effinger First Responders, 2824 Collierstown Road, Lexington, VA. 24450 or the Collierstown Presbyterian Church Kitchen Fund, 31 church Dr., Lexington, VA. 24450. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA. 24450.
