Obituary for Lucille Frances Bywaters Reed Lucille Frances Bywaters Reed
Served As Rockbridge Baths Postmaster For 17 Years

Lucille Frances Bywaters Reed, 87, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Virginia.

She had been a resident at the Borden Health Center at Kendal in Lexington since February, 2007.

Mrs. Reed was a lifelong resident of Rockbridge County, born in Aqua, Virginia on September 8, 1920 and lived for years in Rockbridge Baths.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was the daughter of the late May Viola Chaplin Bywaters and Lemuel Jackson Bywaters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Tate Reed and her son, John C. Reed, as well as four sisters: Anges Hickman, Tola Cook, Vergie Fox, and Edith Spence; and five brothers: Clyde, Leonard, Lloyd, Elmer and Lawrence Bywaters.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Nancy S. Reed and three grandsons: Michael C. and wife, Tonya; Gary S. and wife, Denise and David L. Reed; also, two great grandsons: Dylan Tate and Dustin Scott Reed, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Reed retired from the United States Postal Service after 32 years, having served as the postmaster for 17 years at the Rockbridge Baths Post Office.

She was a faithful member for years of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church.

Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to the Kendal Staff Appreciation Fund, 160 Kenda Dr., Lexington, the Rockbridge Baths Fire Department - First Responders, 5024 Maury River Road, Rockbridge Baths, or the Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, Box 47, Rockbridge Baths, or to a charity of choice.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staff and employees of the Kendal Nursing Facility and special thanks to Dr. James Crews for years of health care.

The family will receive friends at Harrison's Funeral Home in Lexington on Saturday, March 15, 2008 from 4 to 6 p.m. and at other times at the home of Eddie and Kathleen Buchanan in Rockbridge Baths. The funeral will be Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Bethesda Presbyterian church with Rev. Malcolm Brownlee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Michael Reed, Gary Reed, David Reed, John Hickman, Bill Hickman, Roger Sours, Eddie Buchanan and Scott Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers will be elders of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church and Women of the Church.

Arrangements are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
