Lexington Native Served In Marine Corps During World War II

Mary Carrington Dunlap, 84, of Lexington, died Saturday evening, March 15, 2008.

She was born in Lexington, August 7, 1923, the youngest of three girls to Robert Leigh Owen and Louise Brockenbrough Owen.

She grew up in Lexington and would tell colorful stories of life at the Dutch Inn, a local boarding house operated by her mother.

She was a great granddaughter of Judge John White Brockenbrough, founder of the Washington and Lee School of Law, and was a descendant of Captain John Bowyer of Thorn Hill.

She was married to James McKee Dunlap, who served as Lexington town manager. They also lived in Charlottesville and Lynchburg before she returned to Lexington in 2000.

Mrs. Dunlap attended school in Lexington and at Gunston Hall. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

She was a homemaker and mother, and was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her four children, son and daughter-in-law, McKee and Terry Dunlap of Lexington; a son, Robert Dunlap of Arlington; a daughter and son-in-law, Nan and Paul Dugger of Lynchburg; and a son and daughter-in-law, Owen and Irish Dunlap of Raleigh.

She is also survived by six grandchildren: Lisa and Sam Dunlap, Owen and McCarrron Dugger, Peyton and Ali Dunlap.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on March 18 at the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery by Dr. William Kein. A reception will follow the service at Sunnyside at Kendal.

The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, P. O. Box 948, Lexington, VA. 24450.

The Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the arrangements.
