Obituary for Charles Fletcher Murray Charles Fletcher Murray
Much-Loved 'Murph' Was Former Marine, Lexington Policeman

Charles Fletcher Murray, 86, of Lexington, died Sunday, March 16, 2008 at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.

He was born November 22, 1921 in Lexington, a son of the late Clarence Atwood Murray and Beatrice Brown Murray.

Mr. Murray was a member of the Manly Memorial Baptist Church.

He served in the U.S. Marines for four years.

Mr. Murray was on the U.S.S. Savannah when it was bombed at Salerno, Italy.

He was a Lexington policeman for thirteen years and was Washington & Lee's first proctor.

He retired after thirty-two years.

He was made the first honorary alumnus of W&L in 1988 and still attended and supported sports events.

He was affectionately known as 'Murph' by everyone. 'Murph' will be greatly missed by loved ones and many close friends.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marita French Mays Murray; a nice, Martha Murray Fruendner and husband, George; and son, Ian; a nephew, Charles Richard Murray, all of California.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Dr. Michael Wilkins and Pastor David williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Manly Memorial Baptist Church, 202 S. Main Street, Lexington, VA. 24450 or the Millboro Christian Church, Millboro, Virginia.

Arrangements are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Virginia.
