PA Native Was Arlington Hall, Pittsburgh College For Women Graduate

Madeline Lee Sale died peacefully on May 29, 2008 at Wilburn Gardens, Fredericksburg, VA. She was 98 years old.

Madeline Virginia Lee was born March 4, 1910 in Pittsburgh (Bellevue), PA, to George Hugh Lee and Alice Etoile Haney Lee.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William Robert Sale, her brother, George Hugh Lee, Jr. and his wife, Dorothy Ahlers Lee, and her sister-in-law Mary Sale Harris and her husband, Thomas A. Harris.

She is survived by her four nieces: Linda Lee Ford and husband James, Cynthia Lee Loeffler and husband James, Libby Harris Garst and husband Wesley, and Molly Harris Duggan and husband John; five great nieces, four great nephews, and four great-great nieces and a nephew.

Madeline was a graduate of Arlington Hall, Arlington, VA, and Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University), Pittsburgh, PA. She founded and was active in the Pittsburgh Chapter for Arlington Hall Alumnae. After World War II, she and her husband settled in Ridgewood, NJ, where they lived for over 50 years.

Madeline was active in local civic organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution. She traced her Lee lineage back through the Ditchley line. Her paternal grandparents were John and Mary Cameron Lee of Lexington, VA, where she used to visit and listen to their stories of General Robert E. Lee who retired there after the Civil War.

Madeline will be buried in the Lee family plot in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery in Lexington, VA, after a private memorial service for family and friends.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, 1621 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 2600 Mary Washington Blvd., Fredericksburg, VA 22401, or to The Robert E. Lee Memorial Association, 483 Great House Road, Stratford, VA 22558.
