Mabel Smith Shiflett, 97, of Buena Vista, died Friday, July 18, 2008 in the Golden Living Center.

She was born July 20, 1920 in Buena Vista, a daughter of the late Asa E. and Mary Hess Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Philip B. Shiflett, Sr.; three sisters, one brother, three sons and two grandsons.

Mrs. Shiflett was a life-long member of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the American Red Cross and was a 4H All Star.

She retired from Reeves Brothers in 1976.

Surviving are four daughters: Mary Alice Spangler of Glasgow; Phyllis S. Whitten of Lynchburg; Cecelia S. Galmish and husband, Fred, of Lynchburg; and Deborah S. Coffey and husband, Ronnie, of Buena Vista; 23 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mrs. Shiflett's life will be held on Monday, July 21, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bart Hellmuth officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.

Those who wish may consider memorials to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, Buena Vista Presbyterian Church or the American Legion Auxiliary. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008 at the Bolling, Gross & Lotts Funeral Service and at other times at the residence of Ronnie and Debby Coffey, 1814 Cedar Ave., Buena Vista.
