Obituary for Nellie Catherine Whitmer Knick Nellie Catherine Whitmer Knick
Served As General Registrar For County For 23 Years

Nellie Catherine Whitmer Knick, of Lexington, passed away on September 2, 2008 at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital at the age of 79.

She was born on December 15, 1928 in Clifton Forge, the daughter of the late Bernard Ray and Mary Broughman Whitmer; and was also preceded in death by the father of her children, William F. Knick Jr.; and a brother, George E. Whitmer of Staunton, VA.

Surviving are her three children: William F. Knick III and wife, Jade Orr Knick, of Lexington; Scott "Scottie" Whitmer Davis and husband, R. Gene Davis Jr. of Staunton; and Kimberly Lou Knick of the home; grandchildren: William F. Knick IV and wife, Cassandra and Harper Renee Knick, of Lexington; Taylor B. Davis and Sydney Grace Davis of Staunton, Va; sisters: Mildred W. Coffman and Dream W. Crutchfield of Clifton Forge, VA; sister-in-law, Margaret Harris Whitmer; and brother, Cecil S. Whitmer of Goodletsville, TN; and by many dear nieces and nephews.

She had three very special friends, Margaret "Polly" Lawrence, Kathleen Bernice Heizer and Margie W. Slusser, and for their caring and thoughfulness, she was very grateful. Also to be remembered was her special cat "Yoda" which afforded her with many hours of pleasure.

Nellie retired after 23 years as General Registrar for Rockbridge County, having served from 1968 until 1991.

She served as a Justice of the Peace for the Kerrs Creek District for eight years previous to her becoming General Registrar for the county.

A dedicated servant, she served as an Elder in her church, New Monmouth, as long as her good health permitted; a regular attendant of her Sunday School Class; a past Worthy Matron of the former O.E.S. Chapter in Lexington and President of the Highland Bell School P.T.A., which her children attended.

Her most recent achievement was belonging to the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary, where she served in many capacities for 12 years. She made hundreds of hats for newborn babies at the hospital.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested memorial gifts, or contributions, may be made to Lexington Life Savings and First Aid Squad, 350 Spottswood Drive, Lexington, VA, or the Rockbridge County S.P.C.A., 10 Animal Place, Lexington, VA.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church by the Rev. John R. "Skip" Hastings and the Rev. Donna B. Coffman, niece. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
