Obituary for William Arthur Stone William Arthur Stone
West Virginia Native Was Known As The "Clock Doc"

William Arthur "Bill" Stone, Jr., known as "Clock Doc", age 88, of 529 Brussels Avenue, Clifton Forge, died Thursday, November 27, 2008 at his residence.

Born May 28, 1920 in Ronceverte, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Wellar Alfonso and Anna Betty Gibson Stone.

He attended Hinton High School and was inducted into the Hinton High School Hall of Fame, because he belonged to the thirteen member ̉Iron MenÓ football team that won the State Championship against Charleston in 1937.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a retired road mechanic for CSX Transportation.

He belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Hinton and also the American Legion. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he was in the Men's Bible Class, and with his wife, also helped in the nursery for many years.

He was best known in area for making clocks - having made fifty-two grandfather clocks - and also for repairing clocks.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Ryalls Stone; a sister, Virginia, and a brother, John.

He is survived by two daughters: Sue Ellen McDaniel and partner Curt Laster of Harrisonburg and Gloria Ann Jones of Clifton Forge; a brother, George Edward Stone and wife, Joy of Hinton, WV,; four grandchildren: Kip Hall and wife, Kathy, Stephanie Southerly and husband Rick, and Scott Jones and wife Jennifer, all of Harrisonburg, and Brandon Jones and wife, Rachel, of Covington; four great grandchildren: Addison and Isaac Hall of Harrisonburg and Desmond and Kayleah Jones of Covington, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be conducted on Sunday at 3:00 PM in Central United Methodist Church, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Mike Warren and Reverend Barry Burkholder officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Pallbearers will the grandsons of Mr. Stone as well as other family members attending the service. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Medi Home Health and Hospice, 507 E. Ridgeway Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
