Obituary for John Morrison "Jack" Manner, Jr. John Morrison "Jack" Manner, Jr.
CSX Transportation Engineer Retiree

John Morrison "Jack" Manner, Jr., 83, of Clifton Forge, died Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the Brian Center Nursing Center in Low Moor.

He was born in Clifton Forge on June 6, 1925, a son of the late John Morrison Manner, Sr. and Lela Weeder Manner.

He was a retired Engineer with CSX Transportation in Clifton Forge. He was a graduate of the University of Miami and later attended Virginia Tech. He served as Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #2 and was an Eagle Scout.

Jack served on the Clifton Forge Public Library Board, was an active member of the C & O Heritage Center, Cowpasture River Preservation Association and was a member and sight chairman of the Clifton Forge Lions Club. He served in the United States Marine Corp in the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II and Korean War. He was a Virginia Tech Hokie Club Representative, and member of the St. Josephs Catholic Church.

He had a great love of his family, friends and his Cowpasture River Camp.

He is survived by his wife Jean Ann Higgins Manner; a daughter, Martha Manner-Brown and husband, Dennis, of Fredericksburg; a son, John Morrison Manner, III and wife, Meryl, of Oak Hill, VA; 3 granddaughters; nieces and nephews, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Joan Higgins, of Huntington, WV.

He was preceded in death by a sister Lela Manner Roth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be recited Friday at 11:00 A.M. from St Josephs Catholic Church in Clifton Forge with Rev. Louis Benoit as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

A Christian Wake service will be conducted at 5:00 P.M. Thursday at Nicely Funeral Home followed by visitation until 7:00 P.M. Friends may call anytime at Nicely Funeral Home or at the residence of 1412 Hamilton Ave., Clifton Forge.

The family suggest memorial tributes take the form of contributions to St. Josephs Catholic Church, 620 Jefferson Ave., Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or to the C & O Railway Heritage Center, 312 East Ridgeway Street, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
