Obituary for Phillip James O'Doherty Phillip James O'Doherty
He Served In The Korean War

Philip James O'Doherty, 76, of Covington, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at Alleghany Regional Hospital.

Mr. O'Doherty was born in Woburn, MA, a son of the late Hugh J. and Mary McGowan O'Doherty.

He served his country during the Korean War with the United States Air Force. He was a graduate of the University of Stockbridge at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA. For most of his career he was the Director of Food Service for several colleges with the last one being at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. He retired as the Food and Beverage Controller at The Greenbrier Hotel. He was a past president of the White Sulphur Springs Ruritan Club where he received the Paul Harris Award; he was a honorary member of the Order of the White Jacket College of William and Mary, and also was a honorary member of the Knights of Columbus.

In addition to his parents, he was prceded in death by two brothers, Hugh O'Doherty and Thomas O'Doherty.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Lois Sullivan O'Doherty, of Covington; nine children: Patrick and Teresa O'Doherty, of Winston-Salem, NC, Michael and Lisa O'Doherty, of Herdon, Stephen and Nancy O'Doherty, of Alexander, Thomas and Laurie O'Doherty, of Reston, Jane O'Doherty, of Winchester, Margaret and Bill Corcoran, of Winchester, Kathleen and Shawon Booker, of Lynchburg, Barbara and Doug Young, of Glen Allen, and Beth and Kevin Kennedy; 29 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, John O'Doherty, of Woburn, MA; two sisters, Rose Dunleavy and Phyllis McGuerty, both of Boston, MA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that memorial donations in Mr. O'Doherty's name may be made to the Tribute Program, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 15, 2008 at St. Charles Catholic Church.

The family will receive friends at Arritt Funeral Home on Sunday, December 14, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
